if anyone is going to waste as much time in their life as the people who play video games, doom should be played. doom3 should be played too but don't forget about doom. alas, there are many people who don't know endless emptiness of playing doom for hours, it would seem. they were 15 and had an xbox. they had those games already in their mind as "old and crappy" and they're friends would only agree and further beat into their heads the same thing. you can play doom 1 and 2 with the doomsday engine now which makes it better and the endless mods will take years to finish. You could be quite content in that world, if you'd only stop playing the other games. Doom will never be touched. Halo and the "xbox" will die like many other things, to me. But as we can see, even by this forum, that Doom will never die. For it was a first. An original. Not a cheap 99 cent copy like halo or far cry. the other game that i discovered in my adolescence was half-life. i played it for the playstation 2 first, and found it be good. it was the best playstation2 fps game i had played, and i played it for a long time with the same sweaty hands and arm pits that i had played doom so many times. it had, for a while, trumped doom in my mind. then i got into those damn rpgs final fantasy x and x-2, and that's where that story ended. so i then one day got a bunch of money, went to a computer fair, and built my computer. I played doom again with perfection. Sheer perfection. doom3 was pretty close too, even on ULTRA QUALITY. Yeah. I bet you all spent up to 1000 bucks for that. ha, i laugh. computer fairs are how to BUY COMPUTERS. and so now i'm stuck without being able to play doom3 in linux. Which is all i want to do! i HATE microsoft, for no reason, and i want to use linux. But i can't. i am not saying i'm right, i'm not saying i'm smarter than you windows users, but i really hate MICROSOFT.
